Committee Room, DG Monitoring & Evaluation

A meeting room for the Directorate General Monitoring and Evaluation, Health Department, Government of Sindh — taken from stripped walls to a finished committee room with a coffered ceiling, concealed lighting and full-height walnut panelling.

The brief

Turn an ordinary departmental room into a committee room the directorate could hold meetings in — one that carries the weight the function deserves, without the budget or the theatre of a boardroom. The work covered design, execution and supervision, so the same people who drew it were on site while it was built.

Starting from a stripped room

The room came to us with the plaster hacked back to the structure, an old partition layout in place and services running wherever they had historically been convenient. That is the useful moment to intervene: with everything exposed, the new grid could be set out against the real structure rather than against an assumed one, and the ceiling could be planned around the beams that were actually there.

A ceiling that does the work

The room's character comes almost entirely from above. A deep coffered ceiling in gypsum organises the space into a clear grid, and each coffer carries concealed cove lighting, so the room is lit indirectly — no glare on the table, no grid of downlights staring at the people underneath. Getting that right on site is a matter of levels and setting-out: the coffers were checked against the reflected ceiling plan while the framework was still open, when a correction costs a morning instead of a week.

Panelling, pantry and finish

Walls are lined in walnut-toned panelling with integrated display niches and a fluted section behind the screen wall, tied together with a lighter oak-toned pantry unit for refreshments during long sessions. Floors are carpet tiles — quiet underfoot, practical to lift and replace in a working government building. Snagging closed out on site, and the room was handed over ready to use.
